Social progress and behavioral change

Outline

The IPSP’s initiative on “Social Progress and Behavioral Change” aims to address major global challenges by understanding and influencing human behavior. It emphasizes the importance of sustainable behavioral changes, which are critical for economic, social, political, environmental, and cultural progress. This initiative focuses on integrating behavioral science into various sectors to enhance the effectiveness of policies and interventions, contributing to the four components of the IPSP Social Progress Agenda.

To harness the potential of behavioral science, the IPSP proposes a series of online presentations and interviews with leading experts in applied behavioral science. These sessions, recorded and accessible to a broad audience, will explain in non-technical language how behavioral science can support social progress. The content will be published both online and in print, providing a comprehensive resource for stakeholders.

Stakeholders

The key stakeholders include international organizations, governments, NGOs, and private sector entities that are already integrating behavioral science into their operations. Notable organizations involved are the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, USAID, the International Rescue Committee, and various UN agencies. Additionally, governments and private companies like Google, Facebook, and Walmart are also significant players, having established behavioral science units to drive social progress.

Expectations

This initiative will serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers seeking to apply behavioral science to drive social progress. It aims to provide a clear understanding of how behavioral insights can be leveraged to address the most pressing issues facing society today.

Reforming the Economic and Social System

This component aims to address structural flaws in current institutions and regulations by incorporating behavioral insights. It expects to inform reforms and transformations that create more equitable and efficient economic and social systems, providing actionable recommendations that address existing institutional flaws and regulatory gaps, ultimately promoting fairer and more sustainable development.

Unleashing the Potential for Social Change

By encouraging social innovations and experimentation, this component anticipates that sharing successful behavioral interventions will inspire new ideas and approaches to social challenges. It aims to foster a culture of innovation by highlighting effective examples of nudging and other behavioral techniques, ultimately driving social change and progress.

Strengthening Democracy and Participation

This component seeks to improve collective action and enhance the legitimacy of public decision-making processes. It expects that behavioral science will offer strategies to increase public engagement and democratic participation, leading to more inclusive and effective governance.

Promoting Global Security and Solidarity

By fostering peaceful conflict resolution and enhancing global cooperation, this component aims to promote planetary well-being and international solidarity. It expects that insights from behavioral science will support initiatives that encourage global security and solidarity, contributing to a more peaceful and cooperative world.
